Countless people around the world will suffer from addiction at some point in their life; some will be able to overcome it while others will struggle for the rest of their life. This is something that can have a substantial negative impact on the individual and their loved ones. Many famous people have spoken out about their own struggles with addiction over the years, with Hollywood star Dennis Quaid speaking recently about how he struggled with a cocaine addiction in the late 80s, which left him concerned about his health and wellbeing.
‘Part of the Budget’
Quaid talked about his battle with a cocaine addiction that began in the late 80s. He insisted that cocaine was easily obtainable back in those days, and he made the bold statement that it was thought of as ‘part of the budget’ on many of the film sets he worked on. He added, “Cocaine, back then, was part of the budget. Everyone was doing it, it was everywhere, and it was fun. And then it was fun with problems. Being addicted to cocaine is God’s way of saying you’re making too much money.” However, he soon realised that his addiction was spiralling out of control and knew that he had to make a change before it was too late.
The Allure is Gone
He explained, “I had one of those bright light experiences where I either saw myself ending up dead or losing everything I had worked for.” In 1990, he admitted himself into a rehabilitation clinic for one month. After having treatment in the facility, he claimed that he abstained from both alcohol and drugs for ten years. “I drink now, but cocaine? I was never going to stop until it was all gone. So, I don’t do coke anymore. The allure has gone for me,” he stated.
Anorexia Claims
Dennis will happily speak about his battle with addiction, but he bites back at claims that he suffered from the eating disorder anorexia nervosa in the 90s. The star did lose a significant amount of weight for his role in Wyatt Earp, but he insists that any allegations that he was suffering from an eating disorder are absolutely incorrect. He went on to say, “It’s complete hyperbole. Yes, I lost all that weight, and at the time I said I understand how anorexics felt because I looked in the mirror and couldn’t see the weight loss, and yet you look at the movie, and you can see my skull. But it was never something I had to struggle with.”
Denial
Dealing with any form of addiction is always going to be tough, and it can be more challenging for some. Nevertheless, what so many individuals in this situation fail to realise is that there is support readily available for them to help them overcome their addiction. Some addicts will be in denial about the whole situation and will refuse to accept help as these individuals do not believe that there is any problem. Others will be too afraid to admit it because of the stigma that surrounds addiction, in large part due to the way the media portrays addicts.
